Obesity

Obesity, particularly abdominal obesity, is a risk factor of developing major metabolic diseases, such as insulin resistance, increased inflammation, dyslipidemia and hypertension. TG Biotech has searched pivotal molecules and genes governing obsesity since its establishment. We discovered a pivotal obesity gene, a cytosolic NADP+-dependent isocitrate dehydrogenase that plays a key role in lipid metabolism (J Biol Chem 279: 39968).  This finding facilitated our understanding molecular mechanism of obesity, leading to development of a novel botanical extract, Actiponin®. We continue further investigation to define the composition of Actiponin® and their molecular and cellular targets.

Actiponin®

Actiponin® reduces body fat mass in human body. It is a patented natural extract from Gynostemma pentaphyllum leaf. We proved that Actiponin® activates AMPK (AMP-activated Protein Kinase) that governs  essential cellular functions, such as energy homeostasis, autophagy, mitochondrial biogenesis, and cellular survival and proliferation. We further confirmed that Actiponin® significantly reduces human body fat mass in preclinical and clinical trials. Actiponin® is firstly developed as an edible ‘AMPK activator’ enriched with Damulins A & B. It is used as a main ingredient of body fat reducing dietary supplements produced by global companies, CellMark, Life Extension, Piping Rock, Horbäach, Alpha Lions, Kardashian’s group Lemme and others as well as more than fifty companies in Korea.

Aging-related Metabolic Diseases

TG Biotech has been dedicated to search for nutraceuticals and botanical drugs to prevent aging-related metabolic diseases. Aging results from various causatives, such as genomic instability, telomere shortening, epigenetic alteration, autophagy, mitochondrial dysfunction, cellular senescence and others. We are addressing questions how Actiponin® is able to modulate the aging processes that are particularly associated with energy homeostasis, cellular survival and proliferation, autophagy, and immune responses. Using in vitro and in vivo systems, we are looking for molecular targets of  Actiponin® in cellular networks governing aging processes. At the same time, AI-deriven data analysis systems are employed to complement the molecular cellular biological researches.
